Farnaz Farrokhi-Holmes, Clinical Counsellor, CCC & RCC., MA Comms, MACP
Pronouns: She/Her | Your Counsellor Near Me
Hi, I’m Farnaz!
I’m a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC), Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), an EMDR Therapist, and the founder of Soma House Counselling & Wellness—a space designed to feel more like home than a clinic.
I support individuals navigating trauma, anxiety, burnout, grief and loss, ADHD, relationships, and life transitions—including high-conflict divorce, co-parenting, and blended-family dynamics—as well as those working in high-demand, high-risk, or trauma-exposed professions. I am also an Occupationally Aware Healthcare Provider—trained through Wounded Warriors Canada and First Responder Health—with a focus on understanding the realities, pressures, and long-term impact of these roles.
My approach is trauma-informed, directive, and collaborative—grounded in a biopsychosocial, mind–body lens and informed by neuroscience. This means we work to understand how your brain and nervous system have adapted to your experiences, and how patterns like anxiety, overwhelm, or shutdown make sense in that context. Together, we focus on supporting nervous system regulation and creating meaningful, lasting change.
I hold a Master’s in Counselling Psychology, a Master’s in Communications, and am an EMDRIA-trained EMDR therapist. Together, we work to make sense of your experiences, support nervous system regulation, and gently move through what feels overwhelming—so you can reconnect with yourself and feel more like you again.
Lived & Professional Experience
I bring both lived and professional experience to my work.
I spent nearly a decade growing up in a war-affected environment, including on air force bases where my father served as a fighter pilot and base commander. This shaped my understanding of military culture, operational demands, and the expectation to stay composed under pressure—and how that impacts individuals and families.
Before becoming a clinical counsellor, I spent nearly 20 years in communications and government relations across multiple levels of government, including with the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada. My work focused on public safety, emergency preparedness, foreign affairs, and crisis communications, including serving within Emergency Operations Centres (EOCs) during crisis and emergency activations.
Today, I work closely with military members, veterans, first responders, and trauma-exposed professionals, and am an Occupationally Aware Healthcare Provider—trained through Wounded Warriors Canada and First Responder Health to understand the realities, pressures, and long-term impact of these roles.
I understand what it means to hold it all together under pressure—and the cost of carrying that weight while still showing up for family, relationships, and life.
These experiences shape how I work. I support you in navigating complex situations, resolving conflict, setting boundaries, and making sense of who you are during stressful or life-changing moments. Together, we slow things down, identify what matters most, and move forward with clarity and confidence.
Using evidence-based approaches, I support you in working through what feels uncomfortable so you can build awareness, resilience, and a stronger connection to yourself.

Sir Courtland isn’t just any cat—he’s a dapper, treat-loving, therapy superstar! This charming gentleman started life on a bit of a rough road, growing up in an abandoned property with cerebellar hypoplasia, a condition where a kitten’s brain doesn’t fully develop before birth, making them wobbly and uncoordinated, but they can still live happy lives with extra care! Luckily, his amazing Foster Momma Amber nursed him back to health, and he became the beloved therapy cat at the Nanaimo Family Life Association (NFLA).
But fate had grander plans! During her clinical counselling practicum at NFLA, Farnaz and Sir Courtland formed an unbreakable bond. Now, this distinguished feline has upgraded his royal quarters to Soma House, where he “works” hard—mostly for Temptations treats, warm cuddles, and the occasional noble nap. With his gentle soul and regal presence, Sir Courtland continues to bring comfort, joy, and just the right amount of purr-fection to everyone he meets.

With her boundless energy and expressive personality, she knows exactly how to brighten someone’s day. One scritch behind the ears, and—just like that—you’ve got a loyal friend for life.
But like everyone, Braya sometimes feels overwhelmed, too. She has a sensitive heart and needs to be approached with gentleness and understanding. The best way to say hello? Offer your hand for a sniff, and let her come to you when she’s ready.
Whether she’s offering a calming presence, bringing a smile with her joyful spirit, or simply curling up beside someone in need of comfort, Braya Bear’s golden heart shines brightest when she’s helping others. With her love, warmth, and intuitive nature, she’s more than a companion—she’s a source of healing and happiness.

Relic isn’t just a senior rescue cat—he’s a bit of a local legend with a fan club across Vancouver Island cheering him on every step of the way.
Like many animals, Relic was once a victim of the “throwaway cat” mentality—but his story didn’t end there. With care, consistency, and community, his next chapter became one of healing, connection, and hope.
When Relic first arrived at Soma House, he was cautious—firmly in “I’ll observe you first,” reflecting an avoidant-anxious attachment. Over time, he’s learned that connection can be safe, and now, on his own terms, it shows in a soft meow, a gentle nuzzle, or a quiet ask for scritches.
Relic’s story is all about resilience, hope, and the power of community. He reminds us that healing doesn’t happen overnight—but with the right people (and maybe a few treats), trust can grow, hearts can soften, and connection can find its way back in.
